I thought it was good, but they probably expected a few more people to turn up as the place was only about half full. They'll be better live when they get onto their second album, as there are too many indulgent songs (H&H, COSI, BMD) for such a short set. All the rockers were good though, and the cover was a welcome addition.

I had such a blast!! Me and my friend Barbara turned up at about 6pm because we thought doors was half 6, and we'd never been to that venue before so we thought the mini bar room might be open before doors. But I got to chat to Jenny before queueing so it's all good I wasn't too keen on the first support act (From Great Heights), not really my thing I guess, but I picked up their demo CD so I can give em a better listen. I really liked Inner City Pirates; wish I'd got a pic of their pumpkin arrangement on the wall, it was awesome! Got their free download, I love freebies haha. One member really looked like a cross between Johnny Depp and Barbara's brother. Anyway, to LAR.. I don't know whether it was just the shoddy sound quality at the Barfly, but Steve's voice seemed to have improved soo much since I saw them there. Teresa was great, she was really getting into it and she fits perfectly with the rest of the band I think. Keith had definitely recovered from the fish pie incident Haha love how people started shouting shepherds pie shepherds pie when that was mentioned The set list was short, I didn't expect longer but it went so quick! It seemed like they'd only be playing for 20 minutes before Steve said it was their last song. I'm happy they played Bring Me Down as an encore, it's one of my favourites. The band looked like they were having a great time and that definitely fed into the audience. I would have stayed after the gig for a while but I'd told my dad it was finishing at half 10 so when it did finish he was already waiting at the station.. I would've felt guilty making him wait there any longer. Did LAR come out afterwards? Agreed with the above that it was rather empty for a London gig, a bit of a shame. I would've got some badges or a wristband but I think they only had a couple of different tshirts. Oh yeah I met a guy called Bob who's got a tumblr where he's already uploaded lots of photos of the gig, here it is if you want to check it out.. fallenstarphotography.tumblr.com

www.musicvita.com/music-freak/music-reviews/6675-love-amongst-ruin-live-gig-review.htmlThe link from a review posted to the facebook site. I giggled, purely for the fact the photo at the top shows a photo of the crowd (from behind). The tall female in the centre is me, Stella has the curly hair to my right! Apart from that, thanks for the review. :-) eta: the review text - for reference purposes. Live at the Relentless Garage Highbury 30.10.2010 On the eve of Halloween, the only frightening thing around the area of Highbury & Islington was a man attacking a bin, with a cone, dressed as a cone (basically with a cone on his head). Ahhh the holiday season. But on the flipside the Relentless Garage was a venue I had never visited before, so I went down to pop my cherry. The venue intimate but large enough to fit between 200-300. With Love Amongst Ruin coming on at 9.30pm I was intrigued to sort of have a look around as I waited. For those who don't know who the band are; Steve Hewitt former drummer of Placebo is the frontman of Love Amongst Ruin. After two and a half years spent channelling his energy into a very personal album he now returns as the rejuvenated front man of Love Amongst Ruin, a multi-faceted hard rock band with the crunch of a stone age queen, the crossover appeal of a parkful of linkins and the melodicism of the hardiest fighter of foos. Drop in twists of New OrderDepeche Mode electro-twangle, CanKasabian motorika, Cure atmospherics and hardcore Metallica riffage and you’ve got a bounce-back of potentially Gary Barlow proportions on your hands. With a crowd that were only slightly embracing the Halloween culture of getting into costume, and the others just there to see a Rock band, it was quite a mixture indeed. In fact, the crowd was half dare I say it, middle aged, which was awesome to see them come down and support Steve's new band. Possibly friends of the band, or people from the Placebo days, it doesn't matter, it was nice to see some Rockers still live it up. Blessed with Rock Anthems from ACDC and even Whitesnake before the band came on, I felt I wasn't about to witness a new wannabe indie band. No, this was pure Rock. Opening with killer guitar solos, a lot of energy and a crazy red beam of light above them the band really embraced the gig. Humble to play in such an old venue, Steve showed his sincere appreciation to the people who had come down. It was not packed, but it was still a little buzzing. They even played Halloween Hell, in sign of the times. Their songs have a very catchy feeling to them, and you find yourself singing along with Steve as he bellows out his new music. It is clearly influenced by Foo Fighters in terms of their use of certain chords, and particularly with a certain "der der der der der der" riff so to speak. The percussion is still in Steve as he taps a tamborine when he sings, and his live band were truly excellent. He even mentioned that his drummer was ill, so there was a stand in who was fantastic. I felt sorry for Steve as his microphone let him down. He kept pointing to raise the volume as when he sung in a low key, he couldn't hear himself, and frankly at times, neither could the crowd. Perhaps its also his style, but with an influence of Dave Grohl, he might need to convey a bit more frontman energy just to sort of keep things pumping. All in all, a far from scary gig at Halloween. Love Amongst Ruin have raised the dying Rock culture and bringing it to local venues for now, but next stop could be anywhere for Steve and his new band. Its not easy starting again and this time leading the way, which in an interview we have done with him, he mentioned it was the best decision he had ever made. Good luck to them. www.loveamongstruin.com/

Lol - 'sorry for delay' - I still haven't started my review, and am in the process of uploading some videos to YT.

Thanks for the review Bob - words and photos are excellent *exalts you*. Haha Amy, I didn't notice us in that pic, but I like it! I still have to write a review ... I think I'm in shock coming back to work after a week's holiday and I've been falling asleep early every night. Hopefully I will get my act together this week. Jen I look forward to reading about your experience of the gig and to seeing the videos

London, Garage 30th October 2010I came back from holiday specially for this gig – not even the delights of Slovenia were going to keep me from seeing LAR in London with my lovely sister Zee Zee told me that we were being encouraged to dress up Hallowe’en style for the gig, so we did a bit of shopping in the Angel market – I found a fab witch’s hat and some black roses, and Zee got some gorgeous fairy wings. Note to Steve: they are dark side wings, *not* Placebo wings Unfortunately we didn’t win the prize (as Steve said, it wasn’t a prize for the biggest hat, lol), but it was a good excuse to do a bit of dark side glam – and even Pete enjoyed wearing the hat for a bit We were a bit scared that the gig wasn’t going to happen, having heard that Southampton had been postponed during Keith’s illness. It turned out he’d eaten a bad fish pie, which prompted Jen to yell ‘Should have had shepherd’s pie!’ – a reference to one of Steve’s pet phrases, taken from an old Oxo advert ;D This was the first time I’d seen the support band, Inner City Pirates. They are excellent, and are certainly a band to keep an eye on. I liked their pumpkin lanterns by the merch stand, and appreciated the free download on offer. It was also the first time I’ve seen LAR with Teresa Morini on bass. Wow – she is awesome! I guess with most bands, the attention is focused mainly on the lead singer, and of course we all love our Steve. But I have to say, this is a *band* - and they are all so talented with such stage presence that they *all* command our attention. Donneye’s ‘dying sheep’ riffs on Come On Say It and Hove’s virtuoso performance on Got To Give It Up (Thin Lizzy cover – dedicated by Steve ‘to an ex-friend of mine’) shine through in particular. And Keith giving it LARge on drums, ending every song with a flourish ;D As a band they have made a tight unit, clearly enjoying being and playing together. Hearing them live has made me yearn to hear the new tracks that they’re already working on. Greedy, much?! We ran into Steve’s daughter, who sang the beautiful backing vocals on ‘Love Song’ on the album. This was the first time she was seeing her dad play live with his new band, and afterwards it was clear that the old man had *not* embarrassed his girl! We were lucky enough to join the after-party and chat a bit with Steve and ‘squish the Eye’ (thanks Zee for dragging him over to be molested by us!). I also chatted with Hove properly for the first time, and found him adorable. It was a great night and a fine start to the UK tour.
